A Terrible Quiet

Just when the wings of time got started again, there is nothing we can do but stop them.

Atticus had a sore paw and it seemed to go away and then a couple of days ago it got much worse, and he could hardly walk. He was huffing in pain whenever he limped anywhere. Today he went to the vet. The farmer was awfully worried he might have a nail in his paw but there didn't seem to be any way it could have gotten in.

But the farmer kept thinking: what if he has a nail in his paw? What then? He will have to wear a special boot. Maybe the saddlemaker over by the county line can make a special custom boot for him.

They took the x-rays and he didn't have a nail in his paw. He had bone cancer. And he was too big for them to do anything. A Pyrenees cannot walk on three legs. Especially not one as magnificent as Atticus.

And so today on a beautiful summer afternoon, Atticus went out of this world.

And the farmer came home alone from the vet.

And now all over the farm there is a terrible quiet.

I had no idea it could ever be so quiet.

I am SO,SO sorry. We know what it is to lose a doggie friend - but one as magnificent as Atticus, well, there are just no words. Though you are all very sad, don't worry too much because now he is with his old friend Baby Belle once again, laughing to hear all her tales of life across the Rainbow Bridge. Our hearts go out to you all.

I'm very sorry to read about the loss of the wonderful dog. The farmer must be very sad. The goat should give the farmer a bit more attention to get the farmer through this tough time. God must have needed a good farm dog and Atticus is now without pain. Please take care and know we're thinking of you.

I miss him woofing at me when I arrive to milk, all the while nudging my hand for a scratch.
He used to follow me to the faucet by the well house so he could drink from the stream of water that shoots out of the handle when I water the bucks. I am pretty sure he laughed at me the first time I turned on that faucet and got a shower.
Rest easy big friend. Emily and I will miss you too.

Bless your hearts. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It's always so hard to hear of events as this one. It reminds us all that we will be taking our turns, as well - in due time - with the animals that have entered our lives and become part of our family. I hope in time - you'll be able to feel comfortable enough about welcoming a newcomer to your family.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and I hope you know in your heart you gave him the best of everything and when it came time to make the ultimate dicision for him he trusted you in that. Heaven is a little brighter with Atticus to watch over the little creatures.
